英语读后感篇1
the cop and the anthem
o henry
on his bench in madison square soapy moved uneasily, and when soapy moves uneasily on his bench in the park, you may know that winter is near.
a dead leaf fell in soapy's lap. that was jack frost's card. jack is kind to the regular residents of madison square, and gives them warning of his annual call.
soapy realized the fact that the time had come for him to provide against the coming winter. and therefore he moved uneasily on his bench.
the winter ambitions of soapy were not of the highest. in them there were no dreams of mediterranean voyages, of blue southern skies or the vesuvian bay. three months on the island was what his soul desired. three months of assured board and bed and good company, safe from north winds and policemen, seemed to soapy the most desirable thing.
for years the hospitable blackwell prison had been his winter refuge. just as the more fortunate new yorkers had bought their tickets to palm beach and the riviera each winter, so soapy had made his arrangements for his annual journey to the island. and now the time had come. on the night before three sunday newspapers, put under his coat, about his feet and over his lap, had not helped him against the cold as he slept on his bench near the fountain in the old square. there were many institutions of charity in new york where he might receive lodging and food, but to soapy's proud spirit the gifts of charity were undesirable. you must pay in humiliation of spirit for everything received at the hands of philanthropy. so it was better to be a guest of the law.
soapy, having decided to go to the island, at once set about accomplishing his desire. there were many easy ways of doing this. the pleasantest was to dine at some good restaurant; and then, after declaring bankruptcy, be handed over to a policeman. a magistrate would do the rest.
soapy left his bench and went out of the square and up broadway. he stopped at the door of a glittering cafe. he was shaven and his coat was decent. if he could reach a table in the restaurant, the portion of him that would show above the table would raise no doubt in the waiter's mind. a roasted duck, thought soapy, with a bottle of wine, and then some cheese, a cup of coffee and a cigar would be enough. such a dinner would make him happy, for the journey to his winter refuge.
but as soapy entered the restaurant door, the head waiter's eye fell upon his shabby trousers and old shoes. strong hands turned him about and pushed him in silence and haste out into the street.
soapy turned off broadway. some other way of entering the desirable refuge must be found.
at a corner of sixth avenue soapy took a stone and sent it through the glass of a glittering shop window. people came running around the corner, a policeman at the head of them. soapy stood still, with his hands in his pockets, and smiled at the sight of the policeman.
"where is the man that has done that?" asked the policeman.
"don't you think that i have had something to do with it?" said soapy, not without sarcasm, but friendly.
the policeman paid no attention to soapy. men who break windows do not remain to speak with policemen. they run away. he saw a man running to catch a car and rushed after him with his stick in his hand. soapy, with disgust in his heart, walked along, twice unsuccessful.
on the opposite side of the street was a little restaurant for people with large appetites and modest purses. soapy entered this place without difficulty. he sat at a table and ate beefsteak and pie. and then he told the waiter that he had no money.
"now go and call a cop," said soapy. "and don't keep a gentleman waiting."
"no cop for you," said the waiter. "hey!"
in a moment soapy found himself lying upon his left ear on the pavement. he arose with difficulty, and beat the dust from his clothes. arrest seemed a rosy dream. the island seemed very far away. a policeman who stood before a drug store two doors away laughed and walked down the street. soapy seemed to liberty.
after another unsuccessful attempt to be arrested for persecution a young woman, soapy went further toward the district of theatres.
when he came upon a policeman standing in front of a glittering theatre, he caught at the straw of "disorderly conduct."
on the sidewalk soapy began to sing drunken songs at the top of his voice. he danced, howled, and otherwise disturbed the peace.
the policeman turned his back to soapy, and said to a citizen:
"it is one of the yale lads celebrating their football victory over the hartford college. noisy, but no harm. we have instructions not to arrest them."
sadly, soapy stopped his useless singing and dancing. a sudden fear seized him. was he immune to arrest? would never a policeman lay hands on him? the island seemed an unattainable arcadia. he buttoned his thin coat against the north wind.
in a cigar store he saw a well-dressed man lighting a cigar. he had set his silk umbrella by the door, soapy entered the store, took the umbrella, and went out with it slowly. the man with the cigar followed hastily.
"my umbrella," he said.
"oh, is it?" said soapy. "well, why don't you call a policeman? i took it. your umbrella! why don't you call a cop? there stands one on the corner."
the umbrella owner slowed his steps. soapy did likewise. the policeman looked at them curiously.
"of course," said the umbrella man, "that is - well, you know how these mistakes occur - i - if it's your umbrella i hope you'll excuse me - i picked it up this morning in a restaurant - if it is yours, why - i hope you'll -"
"of course it's mine," said soapy.
the ex-umbrella man retreated. the policeman hurried to help a well-dressed woman across the street.
soapy walked eastward. he threw the umbrella angrily into a pit. he was angry with the men who wear helmets and carry clubs. because he wanted to be arrested, they seemed to regard him as a king who could do no wrong.
at last soapy reached one of the avenues to the east where it was not so noisy. he went towards madison square, for the home instinct remains even when the home is a park bench.
but on a quiet corner soapy stopped before an old church. through one window a soft light glowed, where, no doubt, the organist played a sunday anthem. for there came to soapy's ears sweet music that caught and held him at the iron fence.
the moon was shining; cars and pedestrians were few; birds twittered sleepily under the roof. and the anthem that the organist played cemented soapy to the iron fence, for he had known it well in the days when his life contained such things as mothers and roses and ambitions and friends.
the influence of the music and the old church produced a sudden and wonderful change in soapy's soul. he saw with horror the pit into which he had fallen. he thought of his degraded days, dead hopes and wrecked faculties.
and also in a moment a strong impulse moved him to battle with his desperate fate. he would pull himself out of this pit; he would make a man of himself again. there was time; he was young yet. those sweet organ notes had set up a revolution in him. tomorrow he would be somebody in the world. he would -
soapy felt a hand on his arm. he looked quickly around into the broad face of a policeman.
"what are you doing here?" asked the policeman.
"nothing," said soapy.
"then come along," said the policeman.
"three months on the island," said the magistrate in the police court the next morning.
英语读后感篇2
written in the first chapter of the book pride and prejudice is an extraordinary sentence of which even a person who has had only a brief look upon the book will not fail to receive a deep impression-it is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. in terms of sherlock holmes, we’d better alter the sentence into “it is a fact universally accepted by readers throughout the world that an excellent book in possession of our famous detective sherlock holmes is undoubtedly a masterpiece of all times.” perhaps this is one of the most obvious explanations for the unrivaled popularity of “holmes series” in the field of detective stories. overwhelmed by the remendations provided by my friends, i decided to take a look on this sherlock holmes and the duke’s son originally published by oxford university press.
as a whole, this book is about a case concerning the duke’s missing son. arthur, the duke’s son, was found out in a certain morning to have disappeared, acpanied with which was also the disappearance of the german teacher. the school master dr. huxtable then turned to the famous detective of the time sherlock holmes for help. realizing how tough and important the case is, holmes immediately made up his mind to accept the case and followed dr. huxtable back to mackleton by train. having formed a rough idea about the wholle matter, holmes probed into the case immediately and had a careful investigation of the entire area shortly after the arrival, during the process of which he discovered the body of the german teacher heidegger. finally, primarily due to his prominent ability as a detective, he managed to unravel the mystery and obtained the twelve thousand pounds promised by the duke.
having once started reading this fiction, i was pletely immersed in the mysterious story presented by the book. as the saying goes, “well begun, half done”. at the beginning of the story, just like many other detective stories, the author gives us a brief description of the condition by the words of a client. however, unlike other ones, this story first delineates the client’s strange behavior at length to indicate the severity of the incident in order to attract the readers to continue reading it. as is known to all, vivid depiction is essential to detective stories since it can help the readers understand each figure’s characteristics and visualize the scenes, thus making the story more authentic and attractive. therefore, trying to present a “real world” to his readership, sir arthur conan doyle, author of the original “holmes series”, has skillfully arranged the plots of the whole story from the perspective of dr. watson, a character not so specialized in discovering the t
ruth hidden behind the enigmatic happenings as holmes but so loyal to sherlock homes as a friend that he always acpanies holmes wherever he goes. in this way, he elaborately depicted every scene and character in the book, apart from the special start, the ending of the whole story, being dramatic but reasonable, is certainly an outstanding one. after all, except the author himself, who knows that the duke’s seemingly ordinary secretary is in fact the duke’s bastard? in addition, who knows that the duke actually has already been acquainted with the whole thing before holmes solves this plicated problem? yet, surprising as it is, this ending seems so natural that it fits all the plots of the story perfectly well. while enjoying this wonderful story, i could do nothing but admire the wonderful design of this masterpiece as well as the author’s gorgeous writing skill. closing my eyes, i can even “see” the story happening just like watching a film. not until then did i understand why the japanese cartoon film detective conan used this “conan” as the name of its hero.
as far as i am concerned, nothing is more admirable and surprising in the hero sherlock homes than his profound knowledge which has certainly assisted him a lot when he was studying the case. take the bicycle tyres for instance, holmes actually is capable of recognizing 42 different varieties of bicycle tyres. what’s more, according to his other stories, holmes has studied different kinds of newspapers, cigarettes, people’s footprints and other special things as well. therefore, he seems to have the mastery of anything relevant to the cases he deals with. except for his illimitable knowledge, holmes also specializes in arranging the facts in order and then finding the fact leading him to a great discovery or even the truth itself. from his speaking “every mystery has an answer”, we can readily shape the impression of a man with great intelligence and inflexible will. in this case, after getting rid of unrelated facts, sherlock homes eventually grasped the clue and discovered the amazing fact.

英语读后感篇4
in this semester, i have read the book pride and prejudice in english version. pride and prejudice is one of my favoritebooks. in this book, jane austen shows us different ways and attitudes toward marriage by describing four love stories in the book. many people may simply regard pride and prejudice as a love story, but in my opinion, this novel reflects the english human sentiment of the end of 18th century and the early of 19th century under the circumstance of conservative.this masterpiece ofjane austenperfectly reflected the relation between money and marriage at that time.thereby, it reveal the author herself attitude towards marriage, that is love and marriage based on money, property and social status is not perfect, but it is also stupid without considering all of these.
in this book, jane austengave the people vivid characters.the characters have their own personalities. when i read the book, i can always find the same personalities in the society now. that is why i think this book is indeed the representative of the society in britain in the 18th century.and that is why i like it.
the character in this book i like best is elizabeth. from where i stand, elizabeth is unique. from story to see, elizabeth has both resourcefulness and courage. she has vision and very strong self-respect. what’s more, she is good at thinking. she owns her views and behaves properly. in the novel, whenmr.collins expresses his love and wants to marry her, she can promptly refuse him. furthermore, when darcy’s aunt arrogantly puts forward her requirement that elizabeth should reject mr.darcy, she firmly turns down her offensive requirement. from it, we can see that elizabeth has her own persistence of love and never stop pursuing. of course at first elizabeth also displays significant pride. though not influenced by economic status, elizabeth is most proud of her ability of perception. although it is her wrong perception which causes her to misjudge mr.darcy and also wickham, when elizabeth hears of wickham’saccusations of darcy, she trusts the negative perception of him, and mistakenly views darcy’sconceit. fortunately she finally eliminated her prejudice to him when she got an acquaintance of what darcy did for her, because they give up prejudice to each other, the can have a happy marriage.in my opinion, the personality ethic of elizabeth caused her independent idea of love and marriage and in consequence she earned a happy life.
the language used in this book is one of the reason i like the book. humorous, ironical, polished language and real storyline occurred in this articlegive me a deep impression.although austen was only 21 when she wrote “pride and prejudice”, her sharp observation of social lives makes the style of this book surprisingly mature and lively. the plots in her works are always very natural. the development of the plot is as inevitable as a problem in mathematics.
in a word, pride and prejudice has delighted me with its ingenious plot, brilliant dialogue, and inventiveassortment of unique characters. iwas completely attracted to this book. and in the near future, i will choose other works of jane austen to read. maybe the next book i will choose is sense and sensibility.
